Rossella Biscotti & Valérie Cabanes

Rossella Biscotti (1978, Italy) uses montage as a gesture to reveal individual narratives and their relationship to society. In her cross-media practice, which cuts across filmmaking, performance and sculpture, she explores and reconstructs the social and political moments of recent times through the subjectivity and experiences of individuals, often set against the backdrop of the institutional system. Traces of people's lives, objects and ideas are judiciously woven together into new visual narratives.
Her most recent and longest-running project, The Journey, began in 2016 and links scientific research, oceanography and environmental data from a marble bock in Italy's Carrara quarry in the Mediterranean Sea (between Italy, Tunisia, Libya and Malta).

A graduate of the Accademia di Belle Arti (Naples) and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam), she has taken part in the 55th Venice Biennale, the 13th Istanbul Biennale, DOCUMENTA 13 and Manifesta 9. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions (Fondazione Ratti, Como, daadgalerie, Berlin, Protocinema Istanbul, V-A-C Foundation at the GULAG State History Museum, Moscow, Wiels, Brussels, Sculpture Center and e-flux, New York). Rossella Biscotti's awards include the ACACIA Prize for Contemporary Art, the Premio della 16e Quadriennale d'Arte di Roma, the Premio Michelangelo at the XIVth International Sculpture Biennale in Carrara, the 2nd Prix de Rome in the Netherlands and the Premio NY, in collaboration with Columbia University, New York.

Valérie Cabanes is a lawyer specializing in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, involved in the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples and the recognition of the rights of nature. She co-founded the NGO Notre affaire à Tous in France, which works for climate justice and is at the origin of the Affaire du siècle. In 2015, she initiated the global citizen movement End Ecocide on Earth, which advocates for the inclusion of the crime of ecocide in international criminal law. In this context, she co-organized two citizens' tribunals, including one on the rights of nature during COP21 with NatureRights and the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature. Since 2016, Valérie Cabanes has been a member of the steering committee of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature and advises the United Nations on the Harmony with Nature program. In 2018, she became a member of the scientific committee of the journal La pensée écologique and that of the Zoein Foundation and finally co-founded Wild&Legal in 2019, a law school training in the doctrine of the rights of nature. Author of several publications, including A new Law for the Earth, to end ecocide (Seuil, 2016) and Homo Natura, in harmony with the living (Buchet/Chastel, 2017).
